What is Vims Fish Tagging Program?

Since its inception in 1995, the Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program (VGFTP) has been a beacon of community involvement and environmental stewardship. Funded by Virginia saltwater fishing license funds and matched by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), the VGFTP is a tale of passion, conservation, and connection.

At the heart of VGFTP is a group of dedicated recreational anglers. These volunteers are the backbone of the program, using their time on the water to tag and release fish. This isn't just about catching fish; it's about respecting the fish and the environment and sharing invaluable data that aids in the management and sustainability of marine resources.

The VGFTP operates in partnership with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC), highlighting the power of collaboration. Through this program, anglers become citizen scientists, contributing to the health of the aquatic world we so deeply cherish.

By tagging and releasing their catches, participants provide critical information on fish growth rates, migration patterns, and habitat use. These insights are not only fascinating for those with a love for the deep blue but are also instrumental in ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the thrill of the catch.

The program has evolved over the years, with technology and methods advancing to further the cause. Yet, the spirit remains the same: a community of anglers united by a shared adventure and a collective responsibility to the environment.

Fish Whisper celebrates the VGFTP's mission and encourages all anglers to consider the impact they have on the marine world. It's about more than just fishing; it's about fostering a community that values etiquette, respect, and the environment. It's about being part of something greater, a movement that bridges the communication gap between fish and fish enthusiasts.

So, whether you're a seasoned angler or new to the sport, consider the VGFTP as your call to action. Tag a fish, tell a story, and contribute to the legacy of sustainable fishing practices. Join us, and let's make every fish story one that honors the aquatic world we love so much.
